Reader’s question: Do you need the word that in the following sentence?
Liam explained (that) the template will be generated through the system.
Answer: We can often delete that in sentences, but in this case I think it is necessary. According to one grammar book I consulted, we need that with verbal and mental processes that describe facts.
Liam explained (the fact) that the template will be generated through the system.
Another example could be:
He learned (the fact) that elephants are big.
