Indigenous or indigenous?

By Mary Morel

Reader’s question: Can you please clarify the capitalisation of the word ‘Indigenous’ when referring to Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?

Answer: Yes, use a capital for respect.

When I was updating my response to this question, I realised that it raised the question of which term is better: Indigenous or Aboriginal.

The Creative Spirit’s website addresses this question better than I could with a post called: How to name Aboriginal people.

Another resource is the Monash University editorial style guide.
