Why we contract will not to won’t

A reader sent me a link that explained why we contract the words will not to won’t.

In brief, won’t doesn’t come from will not but from woll not, an alternative form that existed into the mid-1800s.

Will muscled out woll, but won’t muscled out willn’t.
